Most of the Metal craftsmen of Lahore are living in the congested, stinking and narrow streets within and around Lahore. This type of scattered and un-settled dwelling of the craftsmen has created difficulties in having coordination among themselves as well as between them and the dealers/exporters of handicrafts. In such a situation, it is also not possible to have planned production as well as to exercise quality control – a pre-requisite for boosting up the export of Meal handicrafts.
PSIC proposed a scheme at cost of Rs.173.5 million for construction of 50-single storey buildings which consist of artisan workshop on plots of 3 marla for each craftsman. The front of the ground floor would be used as show room and back side as workshop / factory. The private land of 24-Kanals would be purchased/acquired from private sector by PSIC.
